FAQ's
- How many classes in a semester?
- There are ten classes per semester
- Do you do the same songs every week?
- No, the songs vary from week to week. Some songs will be repeated in order to build on ideas “learned” in previous weeks, but no two classes will be the same.
- What kinds of instruments do you use?
- We use a variety of non-pitched instruments (drums, shakers, bells, sticks etc.) that are easy for children to grasp. We use non-pitched instruments rather than instruments that play a note because we want them to sound good together, which builds confidence in children as they’re never playing the “wrong” note.
- My child won’t sit still for 45 minutes
- We don’t expect children to sit still! Children are welcome to learn in whatever style suits them best. For some, that means sitting and observing; for others, that means walking around; for others, that means doing what the grown-ups are doing. All of these styles are accepted and welcomed and we often find that even if a child appears to be doing something completely different in class, they will go home and re-enact the whole class.
- What do you do in the classes?
- forty-five minutes will zoom by before you know it. Each class consists of 10 to 12 songs and rhythmic rhymes. We dance, play with instruments, sing, explore tonal and rhythmic patterns and cuddle during a lullaby.
- Can I bring my child’s grandparent / aunt / uncle etc.?
- Grown-up visitors are always welcome. We want you to think of the classroom as an extension of your living room, so whoever you’d welcome into your home, we want you to feel free to welcome into your child’s music class. If the grown-up visitor has children, we’d appreciate knowing this in advance so we can ensure we have enough instruments etc.
- What is the age range of the classes?
- Music Together® is designed to be appropriate for children birth through five.
- Why mixed-age classes?
- There are several reasons to have a mixed-age class: a mixed-age group tends to foster a better learning environment. Older children learn from being in a leadership role, younger children benefit from the example of an older child. Siblings can attend class together, making it easier (and cheaper!) for parents to provide music classes for multiple children. Children of the same age are not necessarily at the same point in their musical development, so separating them by age doesn’t necessarily offer an experience that will be beneficial. Our musical play activities are parent-child oriented rather than child-child oriented, so separating children according to age is not necessary.
- How many children are enrolled in each class?
- There are typically 6 to 12 children per class.
- I’m not musical. How can I influence my child?
- You are your child’s most important role model no matter what kind of singing voice or dancing feet you have (or think you have). It is less important how well you sing than it is to make the choice to sing. By your example, children will learn that music is a natural, enjoyable and important part of their lives. You, his / her primary caregiver, are the only one who can give them the gift of a positive disposition for making music. No CD can give him that! What your child needs most is to hear your voice. What your child loves most is to hear your voice. Reading the Parent Guide (you’ll receive this the first time you register for a class) will also give you more information about how to interact with your child musically).
- What happens if I miss a class?
- You are welcome to make up missed classes at any time during the semester (up to two make up classes permitted per semester).
- How can I preview a class with my child?
- We periodically offer free demo classes (click on the “free demo classes” link to get more information). If there is no demo class available (or if the scheduled one doesn’t suit your schedule), feel free to contact us in order to arrange to join one of our regularly scheduled classes for a day.
